Slow quilting by hand, using the double baptist fan template. Cotton batting, dark purple no 16 perle cotton thread. Lovely texture. A very happy quilt. 

My Hollyhocks finished at 60" * 72"

This quilt is a little homage to the Norwegian painter Kjell Pahr Iversen. His colourful paintings, especially a series he named Icons, inspired me to take up quilting. Paint or fabric - just two different tools for expression - right?

If you look at the previous blogpost, the Madhouse blocks started out with a pentagon center. These Hollyhock blocks start out with a hexagon center. Variation on a theme. Which I have realised I often do. Do you?

This one has a mix of lovely flowers, mostly Kaffe Fassett. Using charm packs and jellyrolls to get lots of different prints.

Gifted to a good friend with a lovely little garden.

This year was my 50th birthday, and this quilt was my quilt no 50 to part with, as one way to celebrate this milestone.

Thank you for all the kind and encouraging visits here in 2016. I hope to keep finishing up some quilts in the new year. Wish you all a happy and creative 2017!

license to play

I have made a few quilts so far this year. Funny enough, after taking inventory you would think I should start quilting the pile of tops and backs from my previous post. As much as that was my intention, something else happened. The scrap box and some wip / ufo's was whispering to me, and I just had to listen to what they were saying. 

These two "license to play" are both 40" * 48" quilted by machine on white and warm cotton batting. For the backs, I used two lovely prints by Nancy Wolff in a cotton linen blend. They are similar but different, like siblings, maybe....

I had so much fun making them, and would like to write a pattern or hold a class, someday. So only these partial views for now.

butterfly bars

Making more quilts from stash is an ambition of mine. This might in turn be making room for more fabric? Anyway, I have a new quilt to share. It's my butterfly bars, finished at 50" by 60". Soft and warm using quilters dream polyester batting. And it's made from stash.  

I have kept these pretty Sandi Henderson prints bundled up in my stash since making sweet M back in may 2011. 

I like the freedom of the bar layout. This is another quilt that takes inspiration from stack the odds pattern by Denyse Schmidt. The quilt fluttered out of my house yesterday to a loving home.

I am on a finish it up mission. It's all about bindings right now. And I am one of those quilters that loves to sew the binding on the back by hand. In the evening, watching telly and just feel the weight and warmth of the quilt in my lap. So I have a few more finished quilts to show, once I have had a chance to take some pictures. And then there's another couple of quilts in line for a binding.

friday finish

With a sprinkling of snow, on a grey morning: a chance to take some quick pictures of my finished O.W.L.S. quilt. It's 48" by 63" with Hobbs Thermore batting, and quilted with a twisted, irregular grid. The quilting is up to 6" apart which is less than my previous choices. This makes the quilt very soft and it drapes really well.

The warm brown solid is left over Chocolate by Free Spirit Designers Solids, from Eva's Garden. Really love that soft and pretty brown! The owls are another favorite Amy Schimler print. For the quilting I used my Hera marker to mark the lines for quilting. This is a nice way to mark straight lines, and they disappear completely after a bit of time, or a wash. It has come to be my favorite way of marking quilt tops, lately.

wordless wip wednesday

lions and tigers, oh my...

Just a quick post to show the finished quilt from 2 weeks ago. Lions and tigers... is 36" * 52" with a solid green back and Quilters Dream Select batting. It was fun playing with the different widths of the bars, using precut squares and more from stash.

The more I worked on it, the more I came to love that lion print by Amy Schimler. Too cute! I like this recipe (not pattern) and plan to use it again on a later opportunity.
