wednesday wip

I am loving hand quilting more and more. This top has been waiting in line since may 2011. Several quilting designs have been considered. 

I decided to just go for it and echo quilt the stars, using 1/2" space; Hera marker and acrylic ruler, perle cotton no 16 and embroidery needles... Starting by pinning on the soft and slim Quilters Dream Cotton Request. Folding in and basting the edges to cover up the raw cotton edge (saving the clothes from all the fluff).

Using three shades of pink, and off white thread...

One of the lovely things about this voile, is how well the 54" wide fits as a back for medium size lap quilts. This magenta piece was washed twice with color catchers. I might regret using it?

For now, I am in love with the softness, the colors and how easy the needle works through the fabric. This is the second backing in a row (see previous post). And I might just have ordered the third...

We are having the most lovely, warm weather. It came as a shock to the system after the coldest, wettest national day ever, just last week.

Some know how to enjoy an indoor garden. And some can't wait to get outside to the real thing...

I have started making improv blocks. My first attempt is these simple box in a box squares. I wanted to make an indoor garden, and looked trough my scraps and stash for big flower prints and fussy cut them into rectangles of different shapes. Arranging them on my design wall quilt, I wasn't happy until I made them square. I centered them and lined them up i 9 inch blocks. The solid is a Kona Snow. This top is now 27" by 72" and will be a wallhanging: "Peonies".

The quilt is inspired by this beauty.

Next on my list is to try some improv wonky log cabins. But for now, I'll just enjoy some of the beautiful sunny Sunday ; )

This is the quilt I made for the 4SQS5. The challenge was to make a monochromatic quilt, only adding black and white. It turned out cheerful and summery.... always a bit sad to let your swap quilts out of the house. But now its on its way to ..... a good home.

This spring I put together a white quilt, snowwhite - as a backdrop for smaller quilts I had yet to make. Today I counted my smaller wall quilts: I have made seven this year and they are all handquilted. Again, thanks to Tonya for her tutorial on handquilting fans!!! I am a happy quilter ;)

My halloween II with binding. I struggled a bit to find the right fabric for binding at first. This one has tiny flowers on it, and is very cute....

Another little finish. Earlier I posted about how I was playing with my Amy Butler charm pack. I put these blocks aside for a while. Finally I took my seamripper and undid all but three of the blocks. Two of them ended up as a little tablerunner. I am happy with this, just love the colors!!!

my smallest quilt so far

How small can a quilt be? This little wall quilt is 6" by 12". Its hand quilted, the vase is appliqued and the flowers are thrifted sateén with mother of pearl buttons received as a gift. And yes, the blue vase fabric was another gift. So all in all, little quilt, lots of love put into it.... And it will sit ontop of my Snowhite on the wall.

It is funny how I started out making big quilts (~90" by 60") to cover walls, and now have progressed to making smaller quilts - and not the other way around. Well, have fun, no matter if the quilt is big or small....

Snow White

This quilt is now called Snow White. I posted about it earlier and promised a picture of it when I had completed it. It is partly a backdrop for small quilts (My plan is to have at least 7 of them) and partly a design wall for thinking about the next step in a design prosess. Here is a pic of some of my scrappy cabins that might end up as a table cloth?

Flea marked find

Some flowers in a pot outside - a mini garden in april. Love the feeling of spring that you get on a sunny day like today.

Yesterday I saw a sign saying flea marked, and desided to look inside. Looking through old and new clothes I filled a plastic bag and payed about $4.00. A few plaid shirts for cutting up, and then strips of white fabric found among old curtains. I have been wanting to make a white quilt for some time, to use as a backdrop for displaying smaller quilts. Wait and see - I'll show pictures to show you what I mean once the white quilt is done. Using my flea marked find and some small pieces of fabric that was laying around I could piece together both backing and top. The quilt is ca 24" wide, and tall... I basted it and started quilting.

Now, all I need is a binding. Can I use the white sateen that I found yesterday, or should I go for some sturdy cotton? Hmm... I'll see. Look forward to show a picture of this quilt an the wall displaying the quilt of the day, the week, or maybe something else.
